You open Excel almost every day.
You enter names, update trackers, copy information from one sheet to another, adjust column widths, search through hundreds of rows, fix formatting, prepare reports for printing, and wonder why a task that looks simple somehow takes half the morning.
The problem is not always that Excel is difficult. Sometimes, no one ever showed you the faster way.
SIGIL: Excel for Everyday Business is a practical, one-day training designed for people who regularly work with spreadsheets but want to become more efficient, organized, and confident in how they use them.
No complicated formulas. No programming. No advanced analytics.
Just the everyday Excel skills that can make everyday work significantly easier.

Course Overview

There is a difference between knowing how to open Excel and knowing how to work efficiently in Excel.

You may already know how to type into cells, change colors, create basic calculations, and save a workbook. But are you still scrolling endlessly through long lists? Reformatting the same information repeatedly? Manually searching for records? Struggling to keep headers visible? Printing reports only to discover that half the columns landed on another page?

This SIGIL focuses on the small techniques that make a surprisingly big difference.

Through hands-on business scenarios, you will learn how to structure information properly, navigate large worksheets more efficiently, manage lists, format information consistently, perform everyday calculations, and prepare spreadsheets that are easier for both you and others to use.

It is the starting point of the SIGIL journey, but it is also a complete course on its own.

What You’ll Be Able to Do

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Organize spreadsheet information using structures that are easier to maintain, sort, filter, and expand.
  • Enter, edit, copy, and move information more efficiently using appropriate Excel tools and shortcuts.
  • Locate and isolate the information they need without manually scanning entire worksheets.
  • Apply consistent number, date, text, and visual formatting to improve readability.
  • Perform common workplace calculations using basic spreadsheet techniques.
  • Navigate larger worksheets and workbooks more efficiently.
  • Prepare worksheets for viewing, sharing, and printing.
  • Apply practical workbook habits that make spreadsheets cleaner and easier to work with.

Your One-Day Quest

I. Tame the Workbook

Before you can work faster, your workbook needs to make sense.

Learn how to move confidently around Excel, work with multiple worksheets, manage rows and columns, keep important information visible, and organize a workbook so you spend less time hunting for things.

You will practice how to:

  • Move around large worksheets without endless scrolling.
  • Keep headings visible while reviewing long datasets.
  • Work more efficiently across multiple worksheets.
  • Insert, delete, resize, hide, and reveal worksheet elements appropriately.
  • Organize workbook tabs so information is easier to find.
  • Use viewing options that make large spreadsheets easier to manage.

II. Enter Once, Work Smarter

Not everything needs to be typed one cell at a time.

Discover faster ways to enter, repeat, copy, move, and extend information while avoiding unnecessary manual work.

You will practice how to:

  • Quickly continue common sequences such as dates, months, and numbers.
  • Copy information without unintentionally copying everything along with it.
  • Reuse existing content without repeatedly retyping it.
  • Rearrange information efficiently.
  • Correct multiple occurrences of the same value at once.
  • Reduce repetitive clicking and typing through practical shortcuts.

III. Turn Lists into Working Data

A spreadsheet becomes much easier to manage when Excel understands that your list belongs together.

Learn how to structure everyday records such as employee lists, inventory logs, customer databases, expense trackers, and transaction records so they remain usable as they grow.

You will practice how to:

  • Turn an ordinary range into a structured, expandable dataset.
  • Keep headings and formatting consistent as new records are added.
  • Organize columns so information is easier to work with later.
  • Recognize spreadsheet layouts that look attractive but make data difficult to use.
  • Build cleaner datasets that are ready for future analysis.

IV. Stop Searching Row by Row

You should not have to scroll through 2,000 records just to find one employee, transaction, or product.

Learn how to quickly narrow down information and bring the records you need into view.

You will practice how to:

  • Arrange lists alphabetically, numerically, or according to multiple conditions.
  • Show only records that meet specific criteria.
  • Quickly find particular words, values, or entries.
  • Replace repeated information across a worksheet safely.
  • Identify the highest, lowest, earliest, latest, or otherwise relevant records from a list.
  • Work with large datasets without losing your place.

V. Make Numbers Say What They Mean

0.15, 15%, and ₱0.15 contain the same underlying number but communicate very different things.

Learn how to present numbers, dates, percentages, currencies, and text appropriately without changing the underlying information.

You will practice how to:

  • Display monetary values clearly and consistently.
  • Present percentages correctly.
  • Standardize the appearance of dates.
  • Control decimal places without manually changing values.
  • Make long numbers and codes display appropriately.
  • Use alignment, borders, emphasis, and spacing without turning the worksheet into a rainbow.

The goal is not decoration. It is clarity.

VI. Let Excel Handle the Arithmetic

A spreadsheet should calculate. A calculator beside your keyboard should not be doing all the work.

Build simple everyday calculations that update when your data changes.

You will practice how to:

  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide values directly in Excel.
  • Calculate totals from lists of numbers.
  • Create basic calculations that can be copied across multiple records.
  • Understand why some copied calculations behave differently than expected.
  • Recognize and correct common mistakes in simple calculations.

This module establishes the foundation needed for more sophisticated formulas without turning the day into a formula-intensive course.

VII. Build a Workbook Others Can Actually Use

A workbook is rarely useful if only its creator understands it.

Bring together the day's techniques to create worksheets that are easier to read, navigate, update, and hand over to someone else.

You will practice how to:

  • Create clear headings and logical sections.
  • Make worksheets easier to scan.
  • Keep related information together.
  • Avoid unnecessary formatting and clutter.
  • Prepare spreadsheets that another person can understand without a lengthy explanation.

VIII. From Screen to Page

Everything looks perfect until you click Print.

Learn how to prepare worksheets for reports, meetings, submissions, and physical copies without fighting with mysterious extra pages.

You will practice how to:

  • Control which part of a worksheet is printed.
  • Fit information appropriately onto pages.
  • Repeat headings across multiple printed pages.
  • Adjust orientation, margins, and scaling.
  • Add useful page information where appropriate.
  • Preview your output before wasting paper and ink.

Your Final Challenge

Build an Everyday Business Workbook

At the end of the course, you will apply the day's skills to organize and prepare a practical business workbook.

Starting from an ordinary worksheet, you will transform it into something that is easier to:

navigate → update → search → filter → calculate → read → print

The challenge brings together the techniques learned throughout the day and gives you a workbook you can use as a model for improving your own files at work.
